Choosing a costume for the San Francisco Halloween Bar Crawl can be a little tricky since you’ll actually have to spend the day wearing it. That giant inflatable dinosaur might be hilarious in your living room, but getting through a crowded bar, boarding a party bus and keeping up with your friends could take a little more effort. If you do choose a massive costume for the costume contest like a giant Ghostbusters Stay Puft Costume, then you might want to have a backup for the rest of the event. The pub crawl starts in the afternoon (except on Friday, 10/30) so it may be (hopefully) warm at that point, but if you stay until the end or plan on going out after the crawl, it could be a lot colder. I have spent several Halloweens regretting my choice or a Spirit Halloween thin costume that doesn't provide any warmth when the sun goes down.

The San Francisco Halloween Bar Crawl is a huge celebration filled with costumes, music, dancing and bar hopping. Thousands of people come out to celebrate, turning a night with friends into a Halloween party that stretches across multiple neighborhoods. With drink specials, DJs and plenty of places to stop, the fun is as much about the people you meet along the way as the bars themselves.

Your outfit should help you enjoy all of it. Whether you’re putting together something simple or planning a serious costume contest entry, a little preparation for Halloween can make a big difference.

Do You Have to Wear a Costume?

You don’t need to wear a costume to enjoy the Halloween Bar Crawl, but it’s definitely recommended. It’s Halloween so dressing up makes the whole experience more fun. Even a simple outfit gives you a reason to join the group photos and fully get into the party. You also don’t need to spend a fortune. A few things from your closet, one recognizable accessory and a good idea can be enough. Matching with friends is another easy option. An individual costume might be simple, but an entire group arriving in the same theme makes an impression.

If you’re on the fence, wear something. You’ll probably be glad you did once you’re surrounded by people who have been planning their costumes since August.

Think About the Pub Crawl When Choosing Your Outfit

A costume that works for a house party doesn’t always work as well for a pub crawl. You’ll be moving between bars, walking along busy sidewalks, dancing and potentially getting on and off buses throughout the event.

A more low profile costume usually makes those things easier. Clothing you can move in, accessories that stay in place and pieces that don’t stick out several feet in every direction are good choices. Giant wings, long trains and bulky outfits can become a project once you’re trying to move through a crowd.

Before leaving home, give your costume a quick test. Can you sit down, climb a few steps and use the bathroom without taking the entire thing apart? Can you reach your phone and ID? If the answer is no, a small adjustment now could save you a lot of trouble later.

Comfortable Shoes Are Worth It

There will be plenty of walking, even if you take advantage of the free party buses. Choose shoes you already know you can wear for several hours. Sneakers, comfortable flats or boots that are already broken in will usually serve you better than brand new costume footwear. I would highly recommend not wearing brand new shoes to the event that may end up causing some uncomfortable blisters and ruining your experience.

Nobody is going to question why your vampire is wearing comfortable black sneakers. Your feet, however, may have some questions if you attempt an entire pub crawl in shoes you’ve never worn before.

The free party buses make it easier to travel between different areas of the event. There will be shuttles on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, with designated stops for wristband holders. They’re a convenient way to cover longer distances, but you’ll still be walking between venues and spending plenty of time on your feet.

Bring a Layer for After Dark

An outfit that feels perfect in the afternoon might feel a little less perfect outside at night. San Francisco can get chilly after sunset, so having another layer or a jacket is a good idea. If possible, work it into your costume. A dark coat suits a vampire, a blazer works for a movie character, and a denim jacket fits plenty of pop star or retro looks. You can also wear a thin layer underneath your costume if you don’t want to carry anything extra.

Think about the temperature inside the bars, too. Something you can easily take off and put back on will be more useful than one heavy outfit you’re stuck wearing all day.

Entering the Costume Contest? Step It Up

If you’re planning to enter the costume contest, this is your reason to put in some extra effort. Lots of people go all out for Halloween and the competition can be serious. I have seen some pretty creative costumes, especially from groups in the last few years.

A strong idea is a great start, but the details help bring it together. Thoughtful makeup, homemade pieces, a clever group theme or a funny twist on a familiar character can make your costume memorable. Staying in character doesn’t hurt either. Get into it with some die hard method acting like Christian Bale and you will nail it.

Going bigger doesn’t have to mean physically bigger. A carefully planned outfit that lets you walk, dance and enjoy the event can be just as impressive as something enormous.

Leave the Giant Props at Home

That oversized sword, huge staff or elaborate accessory might look great in your first photo. A few hours later, you may be trying to convince a friend to carry it. Large props take up space, make it harder to move through busy venues and give you one more thing to keep track of. Some bars may also have an issue with items that resemble weapons or could be used as one, even if they’re part of a costume. Try to make your outfit recognizable without relying on something large in your hands. A small bag or secure pockets for your phone, ID and payment card will be much more useful throughout the night.

Fun and Easy Costume Ideas for 2026

This year’s costume coverage includes movie characters, pop stars, gothic looks and early 2000s throwbacks. These are easy ways to adapt those trends for a pub crawl without committing to a bulky outfit. Plus, sticking with pop culture options usually gets you a lot more compliments than the standard vampire or pirate. You also have to decide whether you want to be instantly recognizable or take a risk with something that is super creative, but may need explanation to some people. Usually the IYKYK kind of costumes are the ones that really hit with the people who will recognize it. Here are a few characters/ideas that I think will be popular for 2026.

Wednesday Addams

A black dress with a white collar, braided hair and a serious expression make this an easy costume to recognize. Add tights and comfortable black shoes for a version you can wear all night.

A Modern Vampire

Start with black clothes, then add fangs and dramatic makeup. A jacket fits right into the outfit, and you can skip the floor length cape. Gothic and vampire looks are among the styles appearing in this year’s Halloween trend predictions.

A Character from The Devil Wears Prada

Channel Miranda Priestly with a polished outfit, silver wig and sunglasses, or take inspiration from Andy Sachs with a blue sweater and office clothes. It’s a timely movie reference that also gives you a good excuse to wear layers.

A Y2K Pop Star

Think denim, tinted sunglasses, metallic accents and a few deliberately overdone accessories. Pick a specific early 2000s music video for inspiration so the outfit reads as a costume. Y2K looks are part of Spirit Halloween’s 2026 trend predictions, and they’re easy to build around clothes you may already own.

Woody or Jessie from Toy Story

Jeans, a cowboy hat and a few character details can do most of the work. These are especially fun as a pair or a group, and you can wear comfortable shoes underneath. Toy Story characters are another theme included in this year’s costume forecasts.

A KPop Demon Hunters Group

For a simplified take on Rumi, Mira and Zoey, focus on each character’s signature colors, hair and stage outfit. Coordinate with friends and leave the large weapon props out of the plan. The characters remain a popular costume choice in 2026, and the group concept works well for friends who want to arrive together.
